CMC Live from Burgerville and a Ride with Mia Birk

Is cycling going mainstream or just selling out?

Join the discussion/ride NOON TODAY here at CrankMyChain.com OR bring your bike meet us at Burgerville on Hawthorne Blvd.

I'll be talking to Burgerville spokesman Jack Graves. From there we'll do a gentle tour of Ladd's while we interview Alta Planning's Mia Birk about her upcoming book and preview tonight's forum with David Byrne, Jonathan Maus, and Timo Forsberg (we'll be giving away a couple copies of David Byrne’s new book to the first two web viewers to connect their video feed and ask for it).

I am trying to arrange some goodies from Burgerville for those who show up on bikes. If that falls through, I’ll buy you a hamburger or something. Vegan? That’ll be a future show.

CMC Live - Naked Bike Ride Flaming Lips Video at Mt. Tabor

The Flaming lips are shooting a video up in Mt. Tabor park from 10am-10pm. It's a naked bike ride video. We're hauling up the disco trike and setting up the live feed. Let's hope we can get a good signal and not violate the terms of the Stickam service agreement to badly. Join in virtually and say hello.

VIDEO:
Recording from the webcast - It's very choppy because of our connection issues:

NOTES:

We had a blast up at Mt. Tabor park and it's still going on (as far as I know). The broadcast was a surprisingly a bit choppy due to the location and we almost got shut down on Stickam.com cause we showed butt cracks on the first take. I thought that would be okay.

The ranger didn't like the butt cracks either. He forcefully said, (and I'm paraphrasing), "put on bottoms or we'll put on handcuffs".

He felt that FL were pushing the limit of their permit with the park. Ya think?

I think if the city wants more Naked Bike Ride movies and the massive budget$ behind them they need to lighten up. Who hasn't seen genetalia in the Portland park before, anyway? ;) Eww, it sounds nasty that way. Well, it was actually quite beautiful today.

In the first scenes the band leader, Wayne Coyne, was carried around by (TEAM BEER) John Howe's trike in a in a big plastic ball (fully clothed) above the crowd of 120 or so naked (and later topless) riders. I was concerned that he was going to roll off the zip-tied milk crates that were holding him up and down the hill, but several strong Portland Cyclists prevented catastrophe during each take. By the look on his face I'm not so sure Wayne was convinced of the safety on his self-designed contraption.

Wayne says he'll get naked later in future scenes.

It was (and is) a perfect day for a naked bike ride video. You can still ride up and let the Flaming Lips exploit your body or catch the video at some later date.

CMC! Live - A View from Madison

MADISON, WI - You might remember Roger Bindl of HEM Productions. He's the 21st century Renaissance man who has a special fondness for electric bikes.

I decided to give him a ring and find out how he got his camera so steady while riding dirt roads on his show Rural Roads with Roger (you'll have to watch the next Disco Trike Live show to find out how).

Turns out we both are very interested in video telecommunications, cycling, and adventure. He watched live show Monday that I did with Johnny Stardust and used a video capture software called Camtasia to record some of the show.

Here is Roger's description:
This video is a story with three topics in disguise... A question on how to get attention, a demonstration of real time and stored video streaming, a touch on web casting with Stickam, and a case of bicyclist that share their enthusiasm in video and singing.

Thanks for the video, Roger. The answer to your question is... Internet. But, I have not tried cable access yet. I'm certain the two distribution mediums with meld soon and cable access stations create that bridge. I know it is already happening at Portland Community Media.

The cable access stations have the production equipment and volunteers to make independent broadcasts happen connecting it to the web seems a short step.

I'll be exploring this subject much more and I am sure Roger will, too.

Catch CrankMyChain! Live tomorrow from 10-11 AM PDT. The Special Guest tomorrow is our FreeGeek in Residence and bike pornographer, Reverend Phil.

Tour De Fat and the "Disco Trike" Debut

PORTLAND, OR - In case you were doing better things then looking at your computer, this Saturday, like parading around Tour De Fat then you missed my live webcast and the debut of the "Disco Trike". It was quite an adventure. It was truly pushing the envelope, the bleeding edge, if you will of live webcasting disco trikes.

Enjoy the sample video from the feed of March Fourth Marching Band.

Please forgive the Audio cutouts. Our crack team of engineers at CrankMyChain.com busy are working on it. Just watch Tomorrow and see.

Below we have a video (pulled from the stream) of one of the fabulous Acrobats from Seattle's Circus Contraption.

Oh, the Sprockettes really kicked ass, too. I just didn't have a good shot :(

If you'd like to find out more about the live webcasting Disco Trike shoot an email to dan (at) pdxk dot com
