Description

Portland, Ore. - Video for the record. Wrapping up the Oregon Bike Summit today was the winner of BikePortland.org's impromptu contest : "What is your big idea for bicycling in Oregon" see bikeportland.org The grand prize winner was out of state. Jonathan asked me to present instead since the idea I submitted was similar. Here is the transcript of my speech: Hey, Kaufman, WHAT'S THE BIG IDEA?! You want a big idea? Okay Oregon, let's build a Coast Hwy 101 for bikes! Oregon's Bike Freeway 101. It's true, there is a bike lane on Hwy 101 and many of us bicycle enthusiasts love that ride; the incredible vistas, parks, and great towns along the way. But let's talk about a bicycle FREE WAY from Astoria to Brookings. Okay... I want you to clap if you'd take parents and your your young children (hypothetical if necessary) on bicycles on any section of HWY 101 today? Before the next question, let's back up and define a bicycle freeway. It's a dedicated, paved path that rarely interfaces motorized vehicles AND designedso pedestrians can also feel comfortable walking on it especially in congested areas. So with that definition let me here applause if you would take your families any part of Oregon's Bike Freeway 101? Well all right then! Let's book the hotels now and find out all the good restaurants along the way. Wait, wait, wait, I know this idea is TOO BIG!! REEEALLLLY?! Right now, I can buy a Motorized Bicycle From Harley Davidson pop granny on the back and travel to pretty...
