Tonight, Tomorrow: Occupy your Bike!

Published: Nov 11, 2011 by admin Filed under: Wordpress News
I went General Assembly last night to hear what was going to happen now that Occupy Portland has been given it’s eviction notice and to announce today’s 11.11.11 Occupy your Bicycle and Ride to the General Assembly (followed by War Memorial ride).  http://shift2bikes.org/cal/#11-2673
Occupy Portland General Assembly 11.10.11

There were 500 very activated people.  It was very clear that tactical retreat, which would be my inclination, is not going to happen.

The general consensus is that there needs to be a party and potluck Saturday night and camp needs to be cleaned and cleared of much of the stuff (tents and other belongings) in advance.  Occupiers want as many supporters as possible to protect and hold the camp in a non-violent fashion.

Action committees were formed.  I joined with the folks who wanted to see bicyclists and pedestrians gather and circle the park.  It was decided that we call the action Swarm after a similar action from Copenhagen DenmarkSee videos below.

Protect the occupation!  Swarm this Saturday Night Nov 12, on foot or on bicycle.
Swarm The Occupation

11pm at Salmon St Fountain (SW Naito and Salmon in waterfront park) we meet to circle and rally around Chapman and Lownsdale Squares.  Also feel free to arrive in affinity groups on the hour at the site all night/morning long.  Bring good spirits, costumes, music, street theater!

Also bring rain gear (yellow/fluorescent), warm clothing, coffee, and a festive attitude.  Don't bring drugs, alcohol or violence. Be prepared to stay up late or be called back later since we won't know when the Swarm will be needed most.  Text PDXOccupy to 23559 to receive critical updates.

Tonight’s ride should be a good warm up for tomorrow’s.

Don't Tread on me, either!

Don't Tread on Me
I don't typically get on board with the Tea Party or Hoover institute thinkers but I agree with this sentiment quoted below. I think the hard push back by cyclists to Rep. Greenlicks child bike trailer/seat ban and our city's 2005 rejection of putting Portland Police in the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF) are good examples from Portland aka little Beirut.

"The lesson of history is stark and simple. People who are easy to govern lose their freedom. People who are difficult to govern retain theirs. What makes the difference is not an ideology, but an attitude. Those people who embody the “Don’t tread on me!” attitude have kept their liberties simply because they are prepared to stand up against those who threaten to tread on them. To the pragmatist, it makes little difference what ideas free people use to justify and rationalize their rebellious attitude. The most important thing is simply to preserve this attitude among a sufficiently large number of people to make it a genuine deterrent against the power hungry. If the Tea Party can succeed in this all-important mission, then the pragmatist can forgive the movement for a host of silly ideas and absurd policy suggestions, because he knows what is really at stake. Once the “Don’t tread on me!” attitude has vanished from a people, it never returns. It is lost and gone forever — along with the liberty and freedom for which, ultimately, it is the only effective defense." from http://www.hoover.org/publications/policy-review/article/5387

When it comes to cycling it's time for us to take the patriotic high ground. What shows American independence, the don't tread on me attitude, and self reliance more than getting out on the road and riding your bike? Certainly not driving a motor carriage. So wave those flags, my bike riding and feet walking friends, you are the real patriots.  If you are a liberal then you can even ask nicely first -"Please Don't Tread on Me."

CMC Live - Naked Bike Ride Flaming Lips Video at Mt. Tabor

Published: Sep 28, 2009 by admin Filed under: Exclusives Music News
The Flaming lips are shooting a video up in Mt. Tabor park from 10am-10pm. It's a naked bike ride video. We're hauling up the disco trike and setting up the live feed. Let's hope we can get a good signal and not violate the terms of the Stickam service agreement to badly. Join in virtually and say hello.

VIDEO:
Recording from the webcast - It's very choppy because of our connection issues:

NOTES:

We had a blast up at Mt. Tabor park and it's still going on (as far as I know). The broadcast was a surprisingly a bit choppy due to the location and we almost got shut down on Stickam.com cause we showed butt cracks on the first take. I thought that would be okay.

The ranger didn't like the butt cracks either. He forcefully said, (and I'm paraphrasing), "put on bottoms or we'll put on handcuffs".

He felt that FL were pushing the limit of their permit with the park. Ya think?

I think if the city wants more Naked Bike Ride movies and the massive budget$ behind them they need to lighten up. Who hasn't seen genetalia in the Portland park before, anyway? ;) Eww, it sounds nasty that way. Well, it was actually quite beautiful today.

In the first scenes the band leader, Wayne Coyne, was carried around by (TEAM BEER) John Howe's trike in a in a big plastic ball (fully clothed) above the crowd of 120 or so naked (and later topless) riders. I was concerned that he was going to roll off the zip-tied milk crates that were holding him up and down the hill, but several strong Portland Cyclists prevented catastrophe during each take. By the look on his face I'm not so sure Wayne was convinced of the safety on his self-designed contraption.

Wayne says he'll get naked later in future scenes.

It was (and is) a perfect day for a naked bike ride video. You can still ride up and let the Flaming Lips exploit your body or catch the video at some later date.
