BRUSSELS, BELGIUM plays host to the 2009 VeloCity bicycle conference. Here is their great promo video which they showed at the recent 2007 VeloCity in Munich, Germany.

Evan from the Bicycle Transportation alliance turned my onto this video and here is what he had to say at the BTA blog.

It's up! The promotional video for VeloCity 2009 in Brussels, which I got to see at VeloCity 2007, has been posted to the web (view here).

The video just makes me happy. It includes so many pieces of bike culture — kids riding together, racers and elevator-users, bikes on transit, police on bikes, mechanics, and playful people. It's hard to imagine such a singularly joyful video being produced by the government here — kids riding on handlebars? BMXers riding down stairs? people without helmets?

My favorite part is the scene excerpted in the picture — a man pretends to ride the painted-on bicycle on the street. Hooray!

For those unfamiliar with Brussels, it's not a very bike-friendly place (I think 2% mode share), but they're working on it. They probably call themselves "The Capital of Bicycling" because they're where the EU is based. But Brussels travellers will recognize the elevator in the movie, and how nice it is for the lazy among us in getting up that hill.

Trading Car Parking for Bike Racks

BROOKLYN, NY - In a historic first for New York City, the Department of Transportation has replaced three car parking spaces in Williamsburg with bike racks to accommodate about 30 bicycles.

The on-street bike parking, which is right next to the Bedford Avenue stop on the L train, will greatly benefit the burgeoning bicycling mecca of Billyburg. As any visitor or person in the community knows, it is very hard to find a legal spot to lock up your bike there. Hopefully, we will see other places in NYC getting this same treatment.

PORTLAND, OR - Scott Barker whipped up yet another sweet video compilation, featuring some great footage of pro rider Molly Cameron, who made her 2007 MTB debut in grand style, powering away from the rest of the Pro field to take her very first Portland MTB Short Track win ever. Since Molly has been a very consistent finisher in last year's series (2nd overall in the Pro Men, behind "Mr. Short Track" Shannon Skerritt), we hope to see some sparks in the three remaining races. Clay Mankin (1955-2005) owner of City Cycle and renowned bike advocate made a video instruction series called The Bicycle Shop with Clay, which are now available on the web.
